Econet was founded in 1993 by Strive Masiyiwa, who first came to international prominence when he fought a five-year constitutional legal battle leading to the removal of the state monopoly in Zimbabwe’s telecommunications sector. The landmark ruling is regarded as one of the milestones in the opening up of African telecommunications to private capital.

Econet has a strong legacy of ongoing commitment to practicing the principles of Corporate Responsibility. Over the years, Econet has developed many programs which have spearheaded transformation in the lives of thousands of individuals and communities across Africa.
Econet is a privately held group and is not listed on any stock exchange. One our subsidiaries, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe is listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange and its activities are confined only to the Zimbabwe market.

Econet Wireless Global owns a majority stake in the Zimbabwe operation, and it is not the other way round. Many people make this mistake of thinking that because our Zimbabwean subsidiary is listed, it is also the holding company of all our businesses. That is not the case. Econet Wireless Zimbabwe does not own businesses outside Zimbabwe.
Econet Wireless Global is the parent company of the Liquid Telecom Group, which operates Africa’s largest satellite and fibre optic system, with the latter spanning 12 countries.
