Mobile for Energy Access: Mats Granryd and Strive Masiyiwa share their vision

Imagine living in a world where you have a mobile phone, a device that connects you to family, friends, work etc, but no way of charging the battery?

Two-thirds of the 1.2 billion people around the world living without energy are within mobile network coverage.

Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA( A trade body that represents the interests of mobile network operators worldwide), and and Strive Masiyiwa, Chairman & Founder of Econet, shared their thoughts on how mobile technology can, and already is, enabling millions of people to access reliable and clean energy. These two highly influential figures discussed how mobile-enabled energy solutions, such as the PAYG solar model, present ‘big business opportunities’ for innovative mobile operators, making this issue a true convergence of social and commercial purpose.
